Neighboring vintner Bryan Babcock of Babcock Winery traded us four tons of his 2016 Pinot Noir grapes, resulting in a one-time production of this wine. He provided us with three different clones: 115, 777, and 2A (aka Waddensville). Clones 115 and 777 hail from a special section of the Babcock Vineyard that Bryan has named "Ocean's Ghost", and the wines produced from this section bear this name. The clones were harvested and fermented separately in very small lots, aged in 50% new French oak for 18 months, and then bottled in May 2018.
Located on the far western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills, Radian Vineyard is a vast vineyard producing premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes in a very extreme setting. Dramatic changes in altitude and soils laden with gravel, diatomaceous earth, and fossils of ancient sea creatures are all features that distinguish this vineyard. Owned and operated by Jonata and Screaming Eagle wineries, Radian Vineyard, and its sister vineyard Bentrock, produce wines of power and intensity. Our 2016 bottling from this vineyard is a bend of clones 777 and 115 and was hand-picked, fermented in small lots, then barrel-aged for 18 months using 50% new French oak. Bottled in May 2018.
Rancho La Vina Vineyard is nestled along the western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, on California's central coast. The vineyard, which is a part of a family-owned and operated ranch, established in the 1860's, shares its home with cattle, walnuts and various fruit trees. The wines benefit from the wind coming off the Pacific Ocean, making it the ideal cool climate for growing premium Pinot Noir grapes. The wine is made exclusively from clone 115, barrel-aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels and bottled in May 2018.
“The 2014 Chardonnay Huber Vineyard has a classy bouquet of buttered orchard fruits, charcoal, toasted bread and spice. Barrel-fermented (malolactic fermentation was mostly blocked) and aged 15 months in 30% new French oak, drink this rounded, layered, yet still fresh and lively white over the coming 4-5 years.”

Vanilla and crème brulee followed by fresh lemon, dried lavender, and pineapples. Lemons and vanilla beans start out on the palate with acidity and candied flavors swirling together. A touch of cream is cut by the tart green apple and dances with lively minerality. Salty notes back up the flavors of baked pears and pie crust. Finishes clean with lingering toasty qualities.
Established in 1986, Huber Vineyard is one of the oldest vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills appellation. Proprietors Norm and Troudl Huber planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines in 1987 and have remained passionate and meticulous caretakers of their vineyard. Located in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills, the vineyard benefits from the appellation's cool climate, ocean breezes, coastal fog, and incredible soils. This Chardonnay is fermented in small lots, barrel-aged for 16 months in 50% new French oak and bottled in January 2018
Light straw yellow color with nice clarity. Pleasantly herbaceous – rosemary, coriander. Lime peel, wet clay, white peaches, lemon curd, mandarin orange, pie crust. Tart acid jumps out front. Fresh lemons, sea salt, guava, lemon jolly ranchers – tart. Green apples. Background flavors of toasty brioche or sourdough bread. Acid is tart and carries through from start to finish. Vibrant minerality combined with acidity makes for a lively wine with hints of richness on the finish.
The "Highlands" Chardonnay is sourced from several of our favorite vineyards in the esteemed Sta. Rita Hills AVA. The wine was barrel-fermented and barrel-aged for 15 months, using 20% new French oak, prior to bottling in summer 2017. ML fermentation was inhibited, yielding a rich, yet crisp Chardonnay.
